Ron Howard Gives the Final World on Whether There Will Ever Be a "Happy Days" Reboot (Exclusive)

Howard, 71, starred in the popular sitcom as Richie Cunningham, an All-American teenager who navigated adolescence alongside friends including Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli. The beloved show ran for 11 seasons from 1974 to 1984, with Howard leaving after the seventh season to pursue his filmmaking career. At The WSJ Future of Everything event on May 28 in New York City, the show's main character gave it to us straight: he won't reprise his role in aHappy Daysreboot, he told PEOPLE. "It's amazing, but we're not doing a reboot," Howard said. Dia Dipasupil/Getty Howard's longstanding business and creative partner Brian Grazer admitted he'd be interested in producing aHappy Daysrevival, but Howard said he's satisfied with the show's lasting legacy. "The fact that the show endures, and thatThe Andy Griffith Showis still on — both of these shows have never left the air — and it kind of blows my mind in an interesting way," Howard told PEOPLE of his two early acting projects. "There's something about that that doesn't age — it was nostalgia when it was made." He added, "For that reason, [both shows] seem to endure, and it means the world to me." Howard said they "clicked immediately" as professionals, but he also looked up to Winkler. His costar was so unlike other people he had met in Hollywood up until that point, he added. "Henry's a few years older than I am. Yale educated, and he looked at acting in a way that was — it wasn't Hollywood," Howard said. "It was a little more intellectual.
